VOLUNTEERS at a Cynon Valley community radio station are celebrating after enjoying their first week back on air. Dapper FM first broadcast from the Cana Centre, Penywaun, last November, and quickly built up a loyal following. But after four successful weeks transmitting to Penywaun and its surrounding areas, the stations restricted licence ended and the presenters had to hang up their headphones. We are funded by the National Assemblys Communities@one project, said community development officer and volunteer presenter Helen Boggis. And because we are a community station, we are only licensed to broadcast for four weeks at any one time. But we are over the moon to be back on air, and it is going to be an exciting four weeks for us here and for our listeners, she said. Dapper FM which broadcasts on 87.7FM and currently has 22 volunteer presenters promises to entertain its listeners 24 hours a day with an extensive range of music, sport, local features, and up-to-date local and national news. Local guests feature regularly on Dapper FM, as do local bands including Aberdares very own rock band, Cripplecreek, who have their own slot between 8pm and 10pm every Tuesday. Although Dapper FM will finish broadcasting again on May 18, the presenters have high hopes for the remaining weeks and for the stations future. GTFM started in the same way as us, and now they operate on a permanent basis, said Mrs Boggis. Julie Barton, a former producer at BBC Wales, is on hand to train any volunteers who wish to take part in the project. We give help and guidance on all aspects here, said Mrs Barton. Its everything from the technical aspect to having confidence in front of the microphone.Listeners can tune in to Dapper FM on 87.7FM or listen online at www.dapperfm.co.uk Song
